While walking out to the barn, I almost stepped on this guy.
“Well, hello there.”
He followed me, with his beady eyes, craning his neck in different directions. Although he looked like
a praying mantis, he was brown, and I always thought they were green. Hmm…
Noting the leaf he was next to, I TORE into the house to get my camera.Upon my
return, there were several leaves.
Really?
In my haste, I had failed to notice that. He was camouflaged very well. Fortunately, after a bit of
searching, I was able to locate him.
I took several photos. He was so calm and cooperative- not at all like a peacock.
His penetrating stare was like being watched by an alien.
He posed perfectly
and did not seem
at all frightened.
Then the most amazing
thing happened.
He started walking
right towards me-
never losing eye contact.
Oh my gosh, I thought,
what if he bites?
I should run.
FAST.
But then I thought of you, and the great picture I would get.
You’re welcome.
Never, when I almost stepped on him, did I think he would actually be the one stepping on me!
Once I realized he was not going to bite, it was all very friendly. I googled him and, yes,
there are brown praying mantis, as well as green.
I also learned some females are perverted. They actually eat the head off their mate!
While writing this post, I debated is it a him or a her? In the end, I sided with the victim. Does he know his fate?
Does he look forward to it??
That
is
all
from
peacock
prairie.
Have a good day!
