I love a real Christmas tree, but I don’t love the disposal. Using a tree, that took years to grow, for a few weeks,
and then casually disposing of it has never seemed right to me. Farmer Tom came up with the perfect solution.
“Let’s plant it,” he said.
“It has no roots. How will it stand?” I asked.
“I will use a post hole digger,” he confidently replied.
“It will never work,” I replied, just as confidently.
Taking this as a direct challenge, Farmer Tom made a beeline to the barn for the post hole digger and saw.
After trimming off a few of the lower branches and digging a 2 foot hole, he easily dropped in the tree.
I watched…. waiting to silently proclaim my superiority.
The wind rustled across the prairie, teasing the evergreen boughs….
yet the trunk stood tall; it worked!
I proclaimed my surprise, praised Farmer Tom for his superiority, and admitted my error.
This reminds me of a quote by Ogden Nash: To keep your marriage brimming, with love in the loving cup, whenever you’re wrong, admit it; whenever you’re right, shut up.
This rootless wonder has transformed our feeders. What once was scarcely visited has turned into a hub
of frenzied activity.
One year ago, I longed for a view in my windowless kitchen and washing dishes seemed an eternity. Today,
I am overwhelmed by the beauty of my kitchen view and strangely look forward to washing dishes- what
a blessing a year can be.
I wonder what is ahead in the coming year for me? for my family? for the rootless
evergreen gracing my view?

I’m glad you came up with such a great solution! I have a very hard time with the disposal of Christmas trees. I always feel so sad to see them discarded at the side of the road. How they go from glory to waste just doesn’t feel right to me but you have come up with such a great idea!

Oh what a magic post! I just love the idea of dropping the tree into the ground. Perfect. And what a lovely view it is too. As for the amazing array of birdlife .. just gorgeous. I laughed when I read the quote … when you are right – shut up! Hilarious, good advice though 🙂 Wishing you and your family a super 2015.

I love this! We used to just put the old tree by the feeder and leave the strings of cranberries and popcorn. But of course the tree was only propped and soon fell over. Why didn’t we ever think of planting it!!! Blessings on your new year!
