Jet and Julia

March 23, 2015

I would like to introduce my neighbors, Jet and Julia. They live in the pond at the bottom of the hill. Appropriately named
by my seven-year old: Jet after himself (my son’s nickname) and Julia after me!

I love seven.

On a particularly stressful morning, I awoke to this tranquil scene and thought, I wish I were a goose. It was a fleeting
thought, but they’ve got it right. Floating on sun-speckled water while listening to birdsong on their own private pond- what
could be better?

Canadian geese mate for life and can live up to 30 years. There is an intimacy to these two that is apparent in their actions,
and makes me think they are a mature couple.

Last year, they hatched five goslings on Goose Egg Island with two of the goslings living to maturity and migration. In  late
January, the whole clan returned- plus one. I knew they were the same family for they followed the same route while on their
morning walk.

Home again- what faraway place did they visit?

They stayed together as a family unit for several weeks until the mighty Jet…

and the powerful Julia…

kicked everybody out.

“Go find your own place. Goose Egg Island is ours,” they said.

Occasionally, they come back for a visit. While one distracts Jet and Julia, the others sneak onto
Goose Egg Island. This infuriates Jet, and he sends them all packing.

not so great picture but you can see Jet’s determination

Others visit the pond and are pleasantly greeted.

“Come again,” say Jet and Julia.

This is fortunate for me…

and all of you feather-brained friends!

Thanks for visiting my feather-filled prairie.

Beautiful pics and entertaining narrative. The out of focus nature of the action picture enhances it.

There are those who do not care for the geese, but I am completely besotted. Their elegant display of passion and devotion is one I cherish each spring. Thanks for reading Jane.
